This research blog (margins, history in the English-speaking world 16th-21st c ) is the digital working space of the research group « Ecrire l’histoire depuis les marges-Université de Paris» in UMR LARCA 8225 http://www.larca.univ-paris-diderot.fr/themes/ehdm/article/ehdm. It is the heir of the hdlm research blog https://hdlm.hypotheses.org/ (which was associated with an ANR IDEX USPC 2013-2016).

The new blog gathers historians, visual studies specialists, and literary scholars in a resolutely interdisciplinary fashion. They study English-speaking countries in relation with other cultural areas and worlds. The three sections « Race, colour, history », « Historical Fiction » and « Oriental Voices » gather 13 Université de Paris researchers

The « Race, colour, history » section focuses on encounters between various spaces, be they peripheral or central (colonisation and post-colonisation, empires, globalisation, contacts between the Western, Asian, and African worlds) in the 19th and 20th centuries. One of its specific ,goals is to think about the ways we can build a « common library ». Its actions include a seminar series and a summer school project for 2022.

The Historical fiction research project is based on the observation that the popularity of historical fiction in its many diverse forms is stronger than ever today and represents a major medium of historical learning, which is well worth reflecting upon in a critical manner. The project will be conducted through several conferences on the theoretical and ideological issues specific to historical fiction, on its different formats and their evolution through time, its contribution to national myths and stories of national origins, and its role in the propagation of new cultural and political narratives. Other events such as seminars, workshops and presentations will complete the project to allow the eventual publication of a collective work.

The « Oriental Voices » section (16th-long 19th c) is elaborating a joint reflection bearing on the spatial and temporal margins of the British empire in connection with « the East », a space the borders of which remain unstable. Exploring topics on the margins of the « great » political history, this section more particularly focuses on agents and patterns in cultural transfers from and to the Near and Middle East, Central Asia, India and the Far East, for example through the study of trade and sociability networks, the circulation of ideas, fashions, texts and material goods, the role of translators and other cultural brokers.
